Tarmac Driveways and Surfacing

We have been installing tarmac driveways, dropped kerbs, car parks and the likes, since around 2012 every single week. We dig out the area to a good depth if required, to allow a substantial enough sub base of hard core to be installed, giving your tarmac surface the support it needs to last a long time. Tarmac is more often than not collected on our own lorries from the local tarmac plants and is always laid by our own team using our own tarmac rollers and compactor plates. It is collected hot from the tarmac plant, at 160 degrees centigrade and kept hot in an insulated lorry, laid and compacted before it cools off.

Durable and Maintenance Free

A Tarmac surface is a great option, as it's durable, aesthetically pleasing, maintenance free, and hides grime that may land on it.

To overlay or to start with a fresh with a full dig out?

Tarmac can be layed on top of an existing hard stand surface, such as a concrete driveway or existing tarmac driveway, providing the existing surface is of sound structure. We will make an assessment of this and advise what will be the most cost effective, and safe choice for longevity before providing your free quotation. You can save a lot of expense by not digging out an existing surface if it is not needed. However if you do need a full dig out and new sub base to support the tarmac, we own all of our own excavators, compactor plates and lorries, allowing us to do a good dig out, provide new hardcore, base layers and top coat. We take great care when laying your tarmac surfaces, to get a smooth and even finish that will look great in whatever setting it is installed.

There are different gradings of tarmac used in the installation of driveways and dropped kerbs and we choose the most suitable depending on the setting. If we are doing a completely new tarmac driveway installation, a 20mm aggregate size down to dust is used for the base layer, which we install at 60mm depth. Then for the top coat there is a variety of tarmac choices. We tend to use a 6mm stone size in a 'hard stone', which is made up of stones like bassalt and flint. Hard Stone Tarmac gives better grip and the tarmac surface stays looking darker for the extent of it's lifetime. Using a 6mm tarmac makes for a smoother looking surface which works best in a homely setting, or a 10mm stone size can be used if your driveway is on a steep slope, giving a strong bond between stones, but a chunkier looking texture. There is also the option for a limestone tarmac in 6mm or 10mm stone size, which offers less grip, and discolours from black to light grey over the years.

With Dropped Kerbs, the council specify certain depths and grades of tarmac which must be adhered to. We always install our dropped kerbs to the council specifications for your area. In the Devon County and Torbay Council areas, a 70mm depth of 20mm base coat tarmac is used, and a 6mm 'Hard Stone' 6mm top coat must be used.

We would love to hear from you regarding your tarmac driveway, dropped kerb, path or car park project.

Tarmac Driveway Installation Cooks Close, Kingsteignton, Newton Abbot

This installation was a tarmac driveway in Newton Abbot, for the son of a previous customer in Teignmouth where we installed a dropped kerb and driveway around two years ago. They were very happy with the first job we did, so contracted us to install this fairly large tarmac driveway in Kingsteignton.

We used our digger and grab lorry to dig out the existing tarmac driveway to allow enough depth for the 5" new hardcore to be laid, and 100mm depth tarmac surface. We removed a flower bed strip to the right hand side, removed all the green waste, took out two two trees, cut and removed some of the existing front wall to the left and right sides to widen the driveway entrance. We then installed a soak away, aco drainage channels, edgings around the left hand side of the driveway, and used slabs and concrete to create the stone faced looking bed container to the left of the driveway entrance. We then supplied and hot rolled a base coat of 20mm tarmac, and used a 6mm hardstone SMA tarmac for the top coat. For the shape of the driveway we chose to bring the level up a bit higher than what is was, using extra hardcore, around to the left corner, to make the top parking area more level from side to side, which helps with car doors not swinging open or closed.

The customer was very pleased with the installation and kindly left us the following testimonial:

"Great job resurfacing driveway. Very friendly and professional. Highly recommended. Thanks"

Tarmac Dropped Kerb and Tarmac Driveway Installation In Exmouth, Near Exeter, Devon
Tarmac Dropped Kerb and Driveway in Exmouth

This was a tarmac dropped kerb and tarmac driveway access we installed in Exmouth during 2023. The customer had a low sports car and wanted to be able to access his driveway without taking the underside of his car off. We have done many of these type of driveway projects over the years where customers have an unusually low car, and need us to solve the issue. We managed to lower the original height of the rear dropped kerb path edgings by around 6". We installed new edgings onto a new concrete bed, installed 5" new hardcore, a new tarmac base and tarmac top coat. We also needed to dig our and renew enough length of the driveway entrance as seen in the photo, such that the driveway didn't suddenly change shape at the very top toward the dropped kerb area.

We have completed many dropped kerbs in Exmouth over the years, and can give lots of addresses of our work if you wish to visit something we have installed. If you are looking for a tarmac contractor, please give us a call or fill out the contact form, we would love to hear from yo today.

Tarmac Car Park at Hoopers Department Store, Torquay

At this tarmac installation, we were contracted by the well known Hoopers Department Store in Torquay to resurface their concrete staff car parking area. We installed new drainage channels along the frontage of the building and connected them into an existing drainage system.

Using our own 32 ton insulated aggregate and tarmac tipper lorry, we supplied and hot laid a new 10mm SMA tarmac surface. 10mm tarmac is used in a commercial setting as it takes more aggressive wear from traffic.

This type of tarmac installation is called a tarmac over-lay. If you have an existing sound and hard surface below, tarmac can be laid on top as a new wearing course.

Tarmac Driveway and Concrete Dropped Kerb - Shorton Road Paignton
Tarmac Driveway and Concrete Dropped Kerb in Shorton Road, Paignton

At this driveway installation in Paignton, we removed the front wall, dug out the existing driveway, and a new area to the left, to make a much larger parking area for a growing family who needed to park their cars off the road.

To comply with the 2008 SUDS law, stating homeowners must not put new water run off onto the highway, we installed ACO drainage channels and path edgings between the driveway and the dropped kerb, dug a new soak away and connected to the drainage channels. We often see other contractors skipping this part of the job, and have also seen the councils have people dig the dront of their new driveways up to put in the correct drainage! Hence we always install drainage where necessary as part of our driveway installations.

We also dug out the existing dropped kerb and made a new, much larger entrance for the tarmac parking area.

Tarmac Dropped Kerb Installers and Contractors in Exeter
Tarmac Dropped Kerb, Hillyfield Road, Exeter

At this property in Hillyfield Road, Exeter, we installed a tarmac dropped kerb allowing a new vehicular access to the property. We dug out the existing high kerb units, excavated the dropped kerb area, installed new road kerbs and path edgings on the boundary line, all onto a new 4' depth concrete bed, installed 5' depth of new type 1 hardcore, then installed a tarmac base coat and tarmac top coat surface.

Many times when we arrive to install a dropped curb we find that the person who has installed a driveway previously, has not installed path edgings.

Devon county council insist that concrete path edgings must be installed on the boundary line (on the property side) which we always do when we install driveways. If the driveway is laid right up to the footpath, we then have to cut into the driveway or lay the edgings within the footpath area, which isn't really the correct way of doing it. We wish more driveway contractors knew what the rules are and followed them!

Tarmac Driveway Installation in Buckfastleigh

At this property in Buckfastleigh, we were sub contracted in to install a tarmac driveway surface for a local building firm.

We used base coat tarmac to bring the levels up and provide a hard base ready for the tarmac top coat surface of the driveway to be laid. For the top surface we used a 6mm SMA tarmac which is well suited to a steep slope like this as it sets very hard and offers maximum durability.
