We have installed many tarmac driveways in and around Exeter over the last 15 years. Using our own diggers and grab lorry we dig out the area to a good depth, to allow a substantial enough sub base of hard core to be installed, giving your new tarmac surface the support it needs to last a long time.
Tarmac is more often than not collected on our own lorries from the local tarmac plants and is always laid by our own team using our own tarmac rollers and compactor plates. It is collected at around 160 degrees from from the tarmac plant and kept hot in an insulated lorry.
A Tarmac Driveway surface is a great option for a driveway, as it's durable, aesthetically pleasing, maintenance free, and hides grime that may land on it.
Tarmac driveway top coats can be layed on top of an existing hard standing surface, such as a concrete driveway or existing tarmac driveway, providing the existing surface is of sound structure. We will make an assessment of this and advise what will be the most cost effective, and safe choice for longevity before providing your free quotation. You can save a lot of expense by not digging out an existing driveway surface if it is not needed. However if you do need a full dig out and new sub base to support the tarmac driveway, we own all of our own excavators, compactor plates and lorries, allowing us to do a good dig out, provide new hardcore, base layers and top coat. We take great care when laying tarmac driveway surfaces, to get a smooth and even finish that will look great in whatever setting it is installed.
There are different gradings of tarmac used in the installation of driveways and we choose the most suitable depending on the setting. If we are doing a completely new tarmac driveway installation, a 20mm aggregate size down to dust is used for the base layer, which we install at 60mm depth. Then for the top coat there is a variety of tarmac choices. We tend to use a 6mm stone size in a 'hard stone', which is made up of stones like basalt and flint. Hard Stone Tarmac driveways gives better grip and the tarmac surface stays looking darker for the extent of your driveway's lifetime. Using a 6mm tarmac makes for a smoother looking surface which works best in a homely setting, or a 10mm stone size can be used if your driveway is on a steep slope, giving a strong bond between stones, but a chunkier looking texture. There is also the option for a limestone tarmac in 6mm or 10mm stone size, which offers less grip, and discolours from black to light grey over the years.

This is a tarmac driveway we installed in Whipton Lane Exeter where we dug out the lawn, put in 5" depth of new Type1 hardcore and did a tarmac overlay between the two houses.
We used our own digger and grab lorry to take away around 20 tons of earth, laid a block paving header course around the edges of the driveway, took some of the wall down to open up the entrance width, then laid base coat tarmac on what was the lawn area and top coat tarmac to the entire area.

This tarmac driveway we installed in Exeter for a client that had built a new house. We used our digger to establish the right levels in the hardcore, installed aco drainage at the bottom of the driveway to comply with SUDs law 2008 which stated you must keep water run off within the property boundary and not let it run out onto the highway. We often see other contractors not bothering to install drainage, which isn't worth it when the Council get in touch saying you need to dig up the frontage of your new tarmac surface to install proper drainage!
The customer kindly left us a testimonial for their new tarmac driveway and reads as follows:
"Remy and his team did great job on our new build driveway. From the original quote throughout the work there was good communication and they were able to be flexible around site and scheduling constraints."

This is a tarmac driveway and dropped kerb we installed for a customer where a contractor had started the driveway then abandoned the customer, having taken around £8,000 up front. Unfortunately she had to lose that money and start again.
We installed drainage channels, path edgings, a soak away, the tarmac driveway, and a new dropped kerb to widen the access onto the new driveway. The customer then had us back to install a resin bound patio which she was over the moon with.
The customer kindly left us a testimonial for their new tarmac driveway and reads as follows:
"I can’t recommend Remy and his team highly enough. They arrived on time. Worked well together as a team with a challenging layout due to previous shoddy work by another contractor."
