Full driveway and surfacing video edits - Quarry Lane Exeter!
We've started making video edits of lots of our recent jobs, which can be seen on our videos page and YouTube.
In this Tarmac Driveway installation, we dug out the lawn, advised the customer we should be putting in ACO drainage channels and a soak away to follow the 2008 SUDs law and installed them, put concrete path edgings around the sides onto generous amount of concrete as always, hardcore to 5" depth, followed by laying base coat tarmac and top coat tarmac to the driveway area.
Tarmac can be laid on top of an existing hard stand surface, such as a concrete driveway or existing tarmac driveway, providing the existing surface is of sound structure. We will make an assessment of this and advise what will be the most cost effective, and safe choice for longevity before providing your free quotation. You can save a lot of expense by not digging out an existing surface if it is not needed. However if you do need a full dig out and new sub base to support the tarmac, we own all of our own excavators, compactor plates and lorries, allowing us to do a good dig out, provide new hardcore, base layers and top coat tarmac . We take great care when laying your tarmac surfaces, to get a smooth and even finish that will look great in whatever setting it is installed.
If you do require a full dig out and reinstatement for your new tarmac surface, we have all the skills and equipment in house do just that.
None of our work is sub contracted to other people and we fully own our own excavators, hydraulic breakers, concrete cutters, compactor plates, grab lorries and smaller tipper lorries, allowing us to dig out to the correct depths to allow a solid base and reliable installation of your Tarmac Surface.

There are different gradings of tarmac used in the installation of driveways and dropped kerbs and we choose the most suitable depending on the setting.
If we are doing a completely new tarmac driveway installation, a 20mm aggregate size down to dust is used for the base layer, which we install at 60mm depth. Then for the top coat there is a variety of tarmac choices. We tend to use a 6mm stone size in a 'hard stone', which is made up of stones like bassalt and flint. Hard Stone Tarmac gives better grip and the tarmac surface stays looking darker for the extent of it's lifetime. Using a 6mm tarmac makes for a smoother looking surface which works best in a homely setting, or a 10mm stone size can be used if your driveway is on a steep slope, giving a strong bond between stones, but a chunkier looking texture. We also usually use SMA Hardstone particularly, as it sets a lot harder than normal 'dense' tarmac. This helps resist against tyres chewing it up, or going soft in the summer!
There is also the option for a limestone tarmac in 6mm or 10mm stone size, which offers less grip, and discolours from black to light grey over the years.
